Happy #ChardonnayDay!

May 23, 2013

Today is #ChardonnayDay!

I ain’t gonna lie…

This mofo snuck up on me this year.

Luckily, I had this bad boy on hand…

Jason-Stephens 2012 Estate Select Chardonnay

100% of the grapes from the Jason-Stephens 2012 Estate Select Chardonnay come from their vineyard in the back woods of the Santa Clara Valley.  Jason-Stephens does two Chards.  The Estate Chardonnay is 100% Stainless Steel fermented and aged, while the Estate Select sees a fair amount of oak and goes through secondary malolactic fermentation.  It’s 14.5% alcohol, and retails for 30 bucks.

Color: Bright straw yellow.

Nose: Very clean nose of green apple, lime, pear, and wet rocks.

Taste: There’s a good weight to this wine.  It’s got a big initial hit of toasty oak up front, which quickly gives way to buttered green apple, minerals, and lime zest.

Score: This wine is pleasant, but the finish is a bit awkward.  All-in-all, it’s a solid effort from one of my favorite local wineries.  86+

While tasting the wine, I put together a quick little Indian dish for dinner…

20130523-191220.jpg

Basmati Rice with Curried Chickpeas and a Samosa that One of my Students gave me for the Last Day of School

Pairing: The acid of the wine plays well with the lemongrass of the curry.  It really makes the spices pop.  What a great pairing… I rule!

Jeff

The 2013 Wine Blog Awards just got a little more Radder… or… I don’t know where to begin, but I’ll try.

May 20, 2013

Wow!

I don’t know where to begin, but I’ll try.

This is my phone…

20130520-162402.jpg

My Nokia

I mean…

It was my phone.

When my parents moved to a different state while I was in college, they got it for me.

I didn’t really think I needed a cell phone.  Honestly, I used to make fun of people who had cell phones.

But…

When your folks are footing the bill, it’s tough to say no.

This Nokia became my primary form of communication from 2001 to 2002.

Then, my parents started to get upset at the roaming charges (whatever those are) that were starting to rack up on their phone bill, so they discontinued service to my phone.

Like I said, I didn’t really think I needed a cell phone, so I never bothered to set up a service plan of my own.

I did, however, hold onto the phone.  After all, I’ve got a whole lot of people’s phone numbers in it.

Truth be told, I still look up numbers on my Nokia ever once in a while.

Anyways…

In October of 2002, I started dating a beautiful young lady named Kara.

She would eventually become my bride…

20130520-162431.jpg

Here’s proof!

Well…

After dealing with my not having a cell phone for 10 years, she bought me one for my birthday in 2012…

20130520-162442.jpg

Here it is!

Now…

Even though I never really thought I needed one, I figured I could use the phone for photo and video content on the wine blog that I had just started the year before.

At this point,  can say that my phone is the most important piece of blogging equipment I own.

Well…

This morning, I got the news…

Stay Rad Wine Blog is now a finalist in the 2013 Wine Blog Awards for Best Original Photography or Video…

20130520-162451.jpg

Wow!

Needless to say, at this point, I’m stoked to the hella.

I’m especially stoked to be in the running along side some amazing blogs in the same category.

Please take some time today to dive into The Journey of Jordan, What’s in the Bottle, Chasing the Vine, and my personal favorite, 4488: A Ridge Blog.  You’ll be glad you did.  They have some killer content!

If you feel so inclined, you can vote for your favorites at WineBlogAwards.org.

Of course, if you’re a fan of this…

or this…

this…

or maybe even this…

I’d love to have your vote here!

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to spend it with me… Me and my phone, that is.

Stay Rad,

Jeff

White Rocks and Turkey Burgers

May 11, 2013

Is it summertime yet?

In Northern California, it sure has been feeling like it.

On hot days like these, you’ve gotta get you some nice, cold, white wine.

Luckily, the folks at Cornerstone Cellars just sent me this sample…

20130511-193449.jpg

Stepping Stone 2012 North Coast White Rocks

Stepping Stone is the entry-level label by Cornerstone Cellars.  The Rocks series releases a different red and white wine blend each year.  The goal is to provide interesting, approachable, and affordable food-friendly wines every vintage.

The 2012 White Rocks is a blend of Chardonnay and Muscat Canelli selected from the California North Coast AVA.  It rolls in at $18.

Color: Pale yellow, with a bit of a greenish tint.

Nose: Honeysuckle, pear, lime and minerals.  Nice!

Taste: There is a great viscosity to this wine.  The White Rocks is loaded with citrus flavors of lemon and lime, with just a touch of melon.  There are some subtle grassy notes, as well as a hint of honey.  If I were tasting this blind, I would swear that this was a Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend.

Score: This is a fun wine.  It’s got a great balance of fruit, mineral, and acid.  It’s a solid 89 for me, and well worth your 18 dollars.

This wine was great, so you know I had to pair it with some food…

20130511-193503.jpg

Mediterranean Turkey Slider with Tzatziki, Lemon Arugula Salad, and Roasted Corn

Now that ROCKS!

Stay Rad,

Jeff

Torii Mor on a #WineWednesday

May 8, 2013

What up, y’all?

It’s a Wednesday.

I got a wine.

Let’s do this!

20130508-193120.jpg

Torii Mor 2007 Dundee Hills Select Pinot Noir

I’m a big fan of Pinot Noir.  I especially love me some Oregon Pinot.  So, you’ve gotta know that I was stoked to find this bad boy in the box I got from Gary Vaynerchuk when I sent some toys his way back in September.

Color: This wine is definitely showing some age.  Reddish brown to copper at the edges.

Nose: Orange zest, lavender, cocoa powder,  mushrooms, and blackberries.  Pretty.

Taste: This is an interesting one.  Earthy components of soil and mushroom with a minty edge.  Cranberry, raspberry, and blackberry fruits are seasoned with some orange zest.  The tannins were a bit astringent at first, which gave the wine a bit of an awkward feel.  After some time in the glass, the tannins blew off and revealed some cherry cola goodness.

Score: This is a solid wine, but may turn you off if you are not patient.  87 points.

Stay Rad,

Jeff

What is your favorite Oregon Pinot Noir?  Leave a comment, and let us know what you think.

Curaçao: A Dushi Place

May 5, 2013

Hello!

It’s been a little while!

Kara and I spent a bit of time last week on the island nation of Curaçao for a wedding…

20130505-083135.jpg

Wedding on the Beach

Of course the wedding was beautiful, so let me tell you a little bit about the island instead…

20130505-083229.jpg

Curaçao

Founded in 1499, Curaçao is a self-governing Caribbean nation under the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  While the official language is Dutch, the natives speak a language called Papiamentu.  Due to its proximity to South America (35 miles North of Venezuela), locals are also fluent in Spanish.  Due to the bad-assness of this country, this is also a go-to destination for American tourists, so you know that everyone speaks English too.

Basically, you could get by in Curaçao speaking any language you want.

That being said, there is one word in Papiamentu that you MUST learn…

20130505-083322.jpg

Dushi!

Much like Aloha in Hawaii, Dushi has many meanings in Curaçao.  Literally, dushi translates to delicious or flavorful.  On the real, though… Dushi means that something is good or awesome.

On our first full day in Curaçao, Kara and I explored the capital city of Willemstad to see why this place is so dushi…

20130505-083419.jpg

We stopped by the Plein Café Wilhelmina to have a Hoegaarden…

20130505-083503.jpg

And a Carpaccio Pesto Sandwich!

20130505-083548.jpg

We then took a walk through the Waterfort Arches. Bon bini means welcome, by the way.

20130505-083637.jpg

Willemstad is divided into two sides by the Saint Anna Bay. From the side we were on, Punda, you can have a great view of Otrabanda (translated to The Other Side).

20130505-083703.jpg

Here’s another shot of the streets of Punda.

20130505-083737.jpg

And there’s Otrabanda again!

20130505-083759.jpg

What’s really dushi about this place is all the random artwork you see in the streets. Check out this three-dimensional mural!

20130505-083856.jpg

There are plenty of water front restaurants where you can get some tasty tropical drinks…

20130505-083923.jpg

If you’re lucky, you’ll see some massive ships sail by.

20130505-083951.jpg

To get from Punda to Otrabanda, there is a pontoon bridge that swings open and closed to let ships through. While walking across the bridge, I got this picture of Punda.

While walking the streets of Willemstad, I was able to pick up a nice wine from one of the convenience stores to bring to dinner…

20130505-084025.jpg

Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2011 Pays D’OC Pinot Noir

Now, you know that Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild makes one of the most epic Cabernet Sauvignon blends in Bordeaux, France.  If you’ve got a grand to burn, I hear that is some great stuff.  If you don’t have that kind of scratch, you may want to give this guy a try.  It was only 25 guilder (14 bucks).

Nose: Definitely old world characteristics on this wine.  Heavy on the earthy mushrooms, but with some good red currant fruit.

Taste: Oh man!  Mushrooms, soil, bacon fat, and black pepper.  There’s some good red fruit on the palate, with a long acidity that is begging for food.

Score: A great value if you can find it.  I had to fly all the way to Curaçao to get this bottle.  88 points.

The next day was the Queen of The Netherlands’ birthday, so we decided to walk around and see how the people of Curaçao were celebrating…

20130505-084107.jpg

I spotted some more awesome art on our walk downtown.

20130505-084150.jpg

The Queen wears orange. On Queen’s Day, everyone wears orange.

20130505-084240.jpg

We ducked into a sports bar to catch some of the ceremonies on TV.

20130505-084314.jpg

On the way back to the car, we walked by a party that was being set up in an abandoned lot. We were thinking about stopping, but we had a wedding to get to…

20130505-084343.jpg

While driving back to get ready for the wedding, we did see a little graffiti. I got a kick out of this one.

20130505-084411.jpg

Back at the wedding, the Champagne was flowing…

20130505-084518.jpg

Back at the abandoned lot, the party kept going…

Man!  This place is Dushi!

Stay Rad,

Jeff
