Sushi and Wine for my Valentine

February 15, 2013

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day.

You knew that already.

Did you also know what Kara and I drank to celebrate?

If you followed @JeffIsRad on Twitter, there’s a chance that you did.

For the rest of you, here’s what we had…

This wine was given to us as a wedding gift from Jan and Dr. Jan Krupp of Krupp Brothers and Stagecoach Vineyard way back in 2010.  We decided that Valentine’s Day was as good a day as any to break this puppy open and see what it had in store.

So… we took the bottle down to our favorite sushi restaurant, CreAsian, to have a taste…

20130215-163356.jpg

Here it is. Black Bart’s Bride.

The wine is a blend of 70% Marsanne and 30% Viognier from the L2 and 14B blocks of Stagecoach Vineyard.  The wine was barrel fermented on its native yeast, went through 100% natural malolactic fermentation, and was aged sur lie for 9 months in 85% new French oak.  It has an awe-inspiring 14.9% alcohol.  The Wine Enthusiast gave it a 93.  Needless to say, this is a wine geek’s dream (Do you hear that, Wine Geek?).

Color: Super yellow golden straw in color.

Nose: White flowers, honeysuckle, and dried apricots.

Taste: This wine is ridiculously big in its mouthfeel.  In spite of its big, oily viscosity, the Bride has a nice, crisp acidity to go with it.  The palate is all flowers, honey, petrol, and mineral.

Score: I really like this wine, but I’m not one to slap a 93 on it like the Enthusiast.  I’m going 89.

Now…

The write-up in the Wine Enthusiast warns that this wine may be a difficult one to pair with other foods, and I agree…

But…

If it’s gonna work with anything, it’s gotta be Asian.

My feeling was that the oiliness of the fish would bring out secondary flavors of the wine.

Sure enough… as we got into the meal, it’s the crisp acidity that continued to be highlighted in the Bride.  It’s that same acidity that helps make the flavors in the food just pop.

Speaking of food…

Here’s what we ate at CreAsian…

Sashimi Tacos. My favorite!

20130215-163442.jpg

My Soy Sauce, Ginger, and Wasabi. You gotta dip your sushi in this, but I’ll show you what I like to do in a little bit…

Miso Soup. Me so happy!

20130215-163554.jpg

Godzilla Roll. The Bomb Dot Net!

20130215-163605.jpg

I always like to finish my meal by dumping my Soy Sauce, Ginger, and Wasabi over a bowl of rice. Mmmmmmmmm!!!!!

20130215-163613.jpg

Of course, Ice Cream ain’t a bad way to finish things either. *Warning: Do Not Pair this With the White Wine! Yuck!*

And that was Valentine’s Day!

Of course, if you followed @JeffIsRad on Twitter, you probably already knew that.

Stay Rad,

Jeff

First Friday: A 3 Vintage Ridge Vertical

February 10, 2013

Since becoming members at Ridge Vineyards, one event that Kara and I really like taking advantage of is First Friday at Monte Bello.  On the first Friday of each month, they present a members-only tasting that usually highlights a new release.

The Friday before last, Kara and I headed up the mountain in Cupertino to taste a 3 vintage vertical of Carmichael Ranch Zinfandel.  Let’s take a look at how this Alexander Valley fruit has changed over the last couple of years…

20130210-161437.jpg

The Ridge 2007 Carmichael Zinfandel had a jammy nose of strawberries and blackberries. On the palate, this Zin had loads of bright, candied fruits of blackberry and cranberries. There was a nice funkiness to this wine as well.

20130210-161516.jpg

The Ridge 2009 Carmichael Ranch Zinfandel had a pretty nose of blackberries, blueberries, and tomatoes. The palate was mad earthy, and mad balanced.

20130210-161546.jpg

Newly released, the Ridge 2010 Carmichael Ranch Zinfandel was my favorite. The nose of mushrooms, plums, and blueberries was hella complex. The palate had a bright acidity, powdery tannis, and flavors of plums and Earth. This was a real treat.

And that was First Friday.

Don’t worry…

It won’t be the last.

Stay Rad,

Jeff

Tasting My Way through #ZinFest2013 from A to Zin

February 6, 2013

Zinfandel gets a bad rap.

People who aren’t much into wine often think that Zin is supposed to be white… and that’s disrespectful.

Some folks who say they are way into wine think that Zin is just a high alcohol fruit bomb.  They won’t even touch the stuff… and that’s hella disrespectful.

Luckily, the fine folks at ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) have made it their mission to give Zin the love and respect that it deserves.  For the last 22 years, they have been putting on the annual Zinfandel Festival in San Francisco.  It is currently the largest single-variety wine festival in the world.  This past Saturday, I got to attend the Grand Tasting at The Concourse event center as a member of the media to see what was up with America’s Heritage Wine…

20130206-190616.jpg

#ZinFest2013

Now…

The Concourse is a HUGE event center… and the Zinfandel Festival is a HUGE event.  With just around 200 of the best Zinfandel producers in one place, you’ve got to have a plan.  My plan is a three-parter…

Step One: Eat.

20130206-190432.jpg

Bread

Eat a lot.

Say Cheese!

Say Cheese!

Step Two: Spit.

Spit EVERYTHING!

Step Three: Pick one winery for each letter of the alphabet.

Start with A, and work your way to Z.

Ready?

Let’s Begin!

A is for:

20130206-185311.jpg

Adelaida Cellars from Paso Robles: This 2010 offering from Michael’s Vineyard brings some delicious blue and black fruit.

B is for:

20130206-185337.jpg

Bedrock Wine Company from Sonoma Valley: Winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson made a delicious, high-toned wine with this 2011 Saitone Ranch juice.

C is for:

20130206-185424.jpg

Chateau Montelena Winery from Calistoga: Probably better known for their Cabs, and a certain Chardonnay that won the Tasting of Paris in 1976, the magnum of their 2009 Estate Zinfandel brought almost a Bordeaux like quality to the palate. Mad earthy tobacco. Nice!

D is for:

20130206-185444.jpg

Dashe Cellars from Oakland: This was the first of many urban wineries from the East Bay that I had the pleasure of tasting. This 2009 Louvau Vineyard Zinfandel had some tasty tomato and tobacco notes to it.

E is for:

20130206-185522.jpg

Edmeades Winery from Mendocino County: The 2009 Shamrock Vineyard had a nice balance of bright and dark fruits.

F is for:

20130206-185541.jpg

Frank Family Vineyards from Calistoga: Tomato. Tobacco. Plum. Soft tannins. A great Zin from the Napa Valley.

G is for:

20130206-185628.jpg

Grgich Hills Estate from Rutherford: From the winery of the winemaker from Croatia that made a certain Chardonnay for a certain winery that won the Tasting of Paris in 1976, Grgich Hills makes a bright leathery 2009 Zin…

20130206-185649.jpg

They also know their history. Plavac Mali is the Croatian Godfather of Zinfandel. This 2008 PM is super clean up front with dry, tart tannins.

H is for:

20130206-185740.jpg

Hunt Cellars from Chatsworth: The 2007 Rocket Man Zin is super jammy and raisin-like with bright acidity.  It’s $75.  It’s also the cheapest Zin they listed in the tasting program.  Most wineries were bringing quality juice at half that price.  Just sayin’.

I is for:

20130206-185819.jpg

Ironstone Vineyards from Murphys: This 2009 Reserve Rous Vineyard was very bright and balanced.

J is for:

20130206-185834.jpg

JC Cellars from Oakland: Another great urban winery. The 2010 Impostor had these great dusty tannins to round out its tasty cranberry fruit. Fantastic! JC Cellars was one of my favorite producers of the tasting.

K is for:

20130206-185846.jpg

Klinker Brick Winery from Lodi: Bright fruit. Powdery tannins. Not bad.

L is for:

20130206-185906.jpg

Lava Cap Winery from Placerville: Even some of the better Zinfandel makers can go a little overboard.  Lava Cap did a great job showing how tasty a Zin can be when restraint is used.  Good cranberry fruit.  Tasty minerality.  Vibrant.

M is for:

20130206-185925.jpg

Mauritson Family Winery from Healdsburg: This barrel sample of the 2012 Rockpile Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel brought some beautiful notes of orange zest and chocolate. Yum!

N is for:

20130206-185952.jpg

NakedWine.com from The Internet: These guys sell wines for a bunch of small producers. I didn’t like any of the wines they brought, but you may find some gems on their website.

O is for:

20130206-190003.jpg

Ottimino from Occidental: The 2009 Rancho Bello Vineyard brought some good dark fruit and tomato flavors. Really good.

P is for:

20130206-190028.jpg

Pech Merle Winery from Rohnert Park: The 2010 Treborce Vineyard has an oily raspberry type of feel. Very interesting.

Q is for:

20130206-190057.jpg

Proulx from Paso Robles: Look… There weren’t any Q wines. Another P is close enough. I’m glad I hit up this winery. The 2010 Reserve Black Label Willow Creek Farm Zin is big, but has mad balance. This is a confident wine.

R is for:

20130206-190113.jpg

Rock Wall Wine Company from Alameda: Another fantastic urban winery, Rock Wall makes some killer, single vineyard Zins. The 2010 Harris Kratka has some delicious bright berry fruit.

And…

20130206-190140.jpg

Rosenblum Cellars from Napa: The 2009 Monte Rosso Reserve has some massive bright candy fruit. Hella concentrated. Hella delicious.

S is for:

20130206-190158.jpg

Saldo by Orin Swift from Napa: The 2010 issue of this Zin blend is loaded full of concentrated dark candy.

T is for:

20130206-190211.jpg

The Prisoner by Orin Swift from Rutherford: Another Zin blend from Orin Swift, but so different. The 2011 Prisoner has bright red fruit with a rich body. Nice. Yes… This wine should be listed under P… But if you don’t like it, you can sit on a tack.

U is for:

20130206-190232.jpg

Turley Wine Cellars from Saint Helena: The 2011 Hayne Vineyard Barrel Sample is super deep and lovely. I’d love to taste this when it’s finally released.  Yes… U is the second letter of Turley, and that’s close enough for me.

V is for:

20130206-190242.jpg

V. Sattui Winery from Saint Helena: The 2012 Crow Ridge Vineyards Zin is packed full of bright fruit goodness.

W is for:

20130206-190257.jpg

Wine Guerrilla from Forestville: The 2010 Monte Rosso is a fantastically reserved interpretation of a typically concentrated vineyard. I loved it.

X is for:

20130206-190327.jpg

Mazzocco Winery from Geyserville: X marks the spot, and everyone in Northern Sonoma County knows that this is the spot to try a ridiculous amount of tasty Zins. The 2010 Maple brings some massive fruit. Very nice.

Y is for:

20130206-190347.jpg

McNab Ridge Winery from Ukiah: Y? Why not? The 2009 Zinister had a great contrast between bright and dark fruits.

Z is for:

20130206-190412.jpg

Zin Alley Winery and Vineyards from Templeton: These guys are a super small producer in Paso Robles. The 2010 Zin is big on fruit, acidity, and alcohol.

And that’s the Zinfandel Festival from A to Zin.

After tasting through 27 wineries and 74 wines…

I needed a drink.

Cheese with my wine? Heck yeah!

January 24, 2013

After waking up in Monterey this past Monday, Kara and I took a quick drive South to the beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea to do a little wine tasting.

Our first stop was Wrath Tasting Room…

20130124-182255.jpg

Wrath

Wrath specializes in epic single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from the Santa Lucia Highlands…

20130124-182330.jpg

I was loving this Wrath 2010 Tondre Grapefield Pinot Noir…

20130124-182345.jpg

But this Wrath 2010 KW Ranch Syrah was off the charts good!

After checking out Wrath, we poked our heads into The Cheese Shop next door.  Dave TheVegetarian and his wife Kara TheVegetarian told us that we had to hit this place up… So we hit it up.

The Cheese Shop is awesome!

The moment we walked in the door, we were offered samples of some killer cheese.  After a little snacking, we headed to the back of the store to do a wine and cheese tasting…

20130124-182436.jpg

Wine and Cheese at The Cheese Shop

If you ever make it to The Cheese Shop, you’ve gotta do the wine tasting.  All you do is tell them what color of wine you want to taste, and they give you the wine… I was really digging on the Cahors they chose for me.

After cheesing it up, we headed down the road a bit to the Morgan Tasting Room…

20130124-182523.jpg

They make some fantastic wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands. I was a big fan of the 2010 Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir.

Before heading home, Kara and I stopped by the Sea Harvest Fish Market for some tasty seafood…

20130124-182603.jpg

Oysters!

After such an action-packed weekend, it was tough having to go back to work.

Please forgive me while I wine.

Get Out of Town!

January 22, 2013

Sunday was awesome!

Earlier in the day, Kara and I watched the 49ers dominate the Falcons… But you already knew that.

After the game, we decided to drive on down to Monterey for dinner.

After checking in to the Hyatt Regency, we enjoyed a little wine while getting ready for dinner…

20130122-185446.jpg

Krupp Brothers 2007 Stagecoach Vineyard Black Bart Syrah

This Krupp Brothers Syrah holds a special place for us.  It was part of a wedding gift to Kara and me from Jan and Dr. Jan Krupp of Stagecoach Vineyard.  We have been sitting on this wine since the Summer of 2010… Waiting for the perfect occasion… With the 49ers headed to the Super Bowl, we figured that this was as good a time as any.

Now…

On to the wine…

Color: Black.  This wine is black.  Look… Syrah can get inky… And, yes… There is a little bit of red in this wine, but this Syrah is black!  Look…

20130122-185529.jpg

Black! This is probably due to the awesome power of Stagecoach Vineyard… That and the 2% Viognier that’s blended into it. Yes… Viognier is a white grape, but it makes Syrah darker. You can trust me, or feel free to google it… I’ll wait…

Nose: Tasty blackberry on the nose, with tons of black pepper.

Taste: Wow!  What a fun play between the savory notes of leather, tobacco, forest floor, and clove as well as the big fruit of cranberry, orange, and fig.  This wine is super silky and refined, but has the structure to go another 10+ years.

Score: This wine was fantastic!  The only problem was that the bottle ran out of wine too quickly.  93+ amazing points from the Krupps and their Stagecoach Vineyard.

After the wine, we hit up a really nice restaurant located at the Hyatt…

20130122-185609.jpg

TusCA Ristorante

20130122-185637.jpg

Kara and I split a Caesar Salad.

20130122-185703.jpg

This Sausage and Peppers Pizza was all mine!

Make sure to tune in next time, as I tell you all about our fun day in Carmel–by-the-Sea…

Stay Rad,

Jeff

So Excited! I’m Howelling!

January 21, 2013

By now, you’ve got to know that I am a HUGE fan of the San Francisco 49ers…

So when my buddy Dave TheVegetarian invited us over on Sunday to watch the Niners play in NFC Championship game against the Atlanta Falcons, I was all like, “Heck yeah, Foo!”

I had another sample from Cornerstone Cellars, so I decided to bring it over for some good football mojo…

20130121-195214.jpg

Cornerstone Cellars 2009 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Howell Mountain is one of the more prestigious regions of the Napa Valley when it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon.  This effort from Cornerstone has 5% Merlot blended in.

Color: Super dark ruby-red to purple.

Nose: Brambly blackberry and plum fruit with herbs of mint and tobacco and a crack of black pepper.

Taste: Big tobacco and leather notes up front.  Very spicy, but rounded out with good fruits of cranberry and orange zest.  There’s a really good integration of oak, mint, and herbs.  In spite of its big time structure, this wine is mad silky and smooth.

Score: If you’re looking to splurge on a Napa Cab, this is the wine for you.  Big enough to be the star of the night, and stand on its own, this Howell Mountain Cabernet has the balance and acidity to pair with a variety of foods.  I’d love to try this next to a Flank Steak with Chimichurri.  This bad boy deserves all of the 93 points I am giving it.

Speaking of food…

20130121-195318.jpg

We ate a lot…

20130121-195345.jpg

A lot of food!

And speaking of scores…

The Forty-Niners won the game, and are going to the Super Bowl!

I wonder what I should bring to the next game?

Stay Rad,

Jeff
